12: 43: Twelfth House or Twelfth Bhava’s position is in the Rasi of the 12th from the Lagna/Ascendant in the natal chart.
Remember: Rasis are fixed spaces in the heavens. They infuse power or energy to all celestial bodies that passes through them.
Grahas are moving celestial objects that pass through these energized zones and receive+are influenced by them.
Grahas themselves possess certain attributes. They also have ownership of these Rasis/Signs which means that they gain strength or lose strength when they pass through these energized fixed Rasi zones depending on their relationship with the owners or rulers of these signs.
We have covered all of this before. Please refresh if you have forgotten.
12: 44: The Twelfth House or Bhava is the Rasi which is situated East to the Lagna/Rising Ascendant at the time of birth.
In every ancient textbook, the Bhavas or Houses start with assigning a body part to the houses. This is very important. But we have to know THE WHY.
12: 45: The Eleventh House represents the native’s Feet.
The 11th house represented the legs that takes care of mobility. But what is the point of our feet? Each feet have five digits just like the fingers on our hands. Have you ever wondered why we have five digits? Why not three or four or seven? I don’t know the answer but I often ask myself questions like this. And why are they the same number for both feet and hands? I don’t know!
Another random thought I always have is about the habit of touching the feet of elders or how padukas of deities are worshipped. Bharata placed Shri Rama’s padukas on the throne and ruled on his behalf during the exile. Vishnu as Vamana avatara took three steps to cover the heavens, earth and finally crushed the ego of King Mahabali by placing his feet on his head.
During ancient time, students who were sent to study in Takshashila and Nalanda were given a pair of padukas and an umbrella as dakshina to be given to guru. Surya’s brilliance was chiseled by his father in law when he wanted to bring back his wife and fell at his feet. Vishwakarma fashioned a pair of boots for him to shield the fierce light. Aid Shankara describes the feet of Devi in Saundarya Lahiri and it’s exquisite beauty from the arch of the feet to the toe nails.
Injury to the feet was also considered punishing. Anyone with an injured feet was doomed in some way. Yama was cursed by his step mother that his feet would rot away. Shani Deva has a limp and is considered crippled. Yama became DharmaRaj and Shani later became Karmakaraka. Gajendra, the elephant king had his feet caught in a crocodile’ mouth until Vishnu himself came down to grant him Moksha.
I read many puranic stories and I still couldnt come up with a convincing narrative to explain the feet. Then I remembered the imagery for Kalapurusha’s 12th House. The symbol of Pisces is two fish swimming in opposite directions. When I closed my eyes, it seems like two feet going in opposite directions.
Isn’t that odd? Can the two feet of a person travel in opposite directions? I pondered upon it and the following is my understanding of why feet and fishes swimming away from each other is the symbol for 12th house.
As the last house, the 12th bhava is the house that is furthest away from the Lagna or first house. But if you remember how we draw jyotish charts, it is also the nearest one to the first house. After traversing the entire zodiac, the soul comes back to where it started to begin a new life.
A lifetime of teachings and learnings and karma can result in new beginnings or rebirth. Yet, the Maya of this existence pulls the soul away. How many of us embrace the end or death willingly and welcome it? Most of us die kicking and screaming not wanting to leave this world of Maya, but no matter how reluctant we are, the journey has ended and we must leave,
The 12th house is also the House of Subconscious. It is dark and deep mysterious waters that soul has plunged into and has gone into a meditative state. The soul waits here. The only darkness offers no visibility and here the only sense is faith. All other senses..jnanendriyas and karmendriyas..fail.
So this is also the House of Faith. But ultimately it is the House of Losses. One cannot ascend to the next level of this Maya game without quitting the previous level. This body, life, memories, relationships, all material things have to be left behind. All that seemed real needs to be lost to us so that when we leave the portal, we carry with us just our karmic baggage. We come with karmic baggage and we will leave with only karma. The baggage may be lighter or heavier, but that’s all we can carry with us.
And at this threshold, another life and another birth awaits. New lessons to be learnt, old debts to be paid and other experiences await. The four directions begins in the Eastern horizon upon birth. 4th house becomes the most important nourishing house(Sukha Sthana) in the North. We find our mates and partners in the opposite 7th house in the West. We perform our karmas in Karma Sthana of 10th house in the south. And now at the 12th house we come back to the same place where we started, the East. It is time to die.
The Kalapurusha’s two feet are pointed in opposite directions because one part of the Jeeva wants to go back to the land of living and the other part wants to restart with a new birth. Meanwhile, the Atman.. which is but a fragment of the Universal Cosmic Consciousness, the Brahman…has gone into deep meditation and contemplation in the waters of Pisces Rasi.
The Karaka of 12th house is Saturn. As the Karmakaraka, he watches over the final stage for the soul as it leaves the 12th and will eventually enter again in 1st for a new birth.
Of course, in a human chart as opposed to the Kalapurusha’s chart, 12th house is not the chart where one dies. The 12th house is obviously the end of something and 1st house is the house of beginnings and new initiatives. Depending on the Lagna placement, the 12th house could be any of the twelve Rasis in the zodiac.
The 12th bhava is the house of losses and not obstacles. It is important to remember this.
Assignment 1: write down all Rasis and then write down the 12th bhava of each of the Rasis. Apply the karakas or keywords we learnt in the past 2 weeks. Come up with your own formula.
Example: For a Virgo Ascendant, the seventh house is Pisces. Virgo’s sense of self/identity (first house)will be lost in the seventh house of partnership. Their relationship with their partners(be it spouse or business partners) would be one of total devotion.
Otoh: the 12th house of Virgo Asc will be Leo Rasi. The native would have suffered a set back or a loss of a Leo signification like Father or Education or Romance First Love. Or they may have to deal with losses while dealing with the govt.
Now..come up with your own system or formula for all the lagnas and what their 12th house means to each one of them.
Do it for all 12 Lagnas. This is the only assignment for today.
12: 46: The 12th house is primarily Vyaya Bhava, the house of losses.
As the house that is furthest away from the Lagna, it also signifies long distance travel.
It is also the house of spirituality. Being the house of spirituality and long distance travel, we can see pilgrimages here.
As the house of loss and having the 7th aspect of the 6th house, this also becomes the house of hospitalizations, asylums and prisons as these institutions causes separation and a sense of loss.
All forms of isolation can be seen in the 12th house. Today, travel and settlement in foreign lands is common place, but in the ancient times, only those who were punished or banished crossed oceans and away from the comfort of home.
Not only was crossing oceans akin to a prison sentence, it could also indicate pilgrimage that one undertook towards the end of life to be far away from the familial bonds.
In the 12th house, one also finds salvation or moksha. In the Kalapurusha chart, the 12th house is Pisces Rasi that is ruled by Jupiter. Here Venus is exalted and Mercury is debilitated. The DevaGuru exalts his nemesis, Shukracharya in his own house. Here love is without attachment to Maya and is pure. It is the love that leads one to Moksha. Mercury that signifies critical thinking and rational/logical thought is weak. This isn’t a place for Mercury gifts.
Jupiter, the lord of the natural 12th house of Pisces and in the original Kalapurusha’s chart. also is about following rules and regulations. But since Saturn is the karaka of the 12th house, it happens under the cold and restrictive gaze of our Karmakaraka.
Not everyone is going to be in hospital or look for moksha. The 12th house is also the house of bed pleasures. That came from the left field, didn’t it? What it means is that moksha is not for everyone and carnal desires is how we seed the next birth. The cycle of life, death and rebirth will be spinning for most of us and we will be getting on and off that trip due to our karmic baggages and vasanas.
If fifth house indicates infatuation and romance, seventh house is all about partnership, solemnising it with commitment/devotion and the official version of it that is marriage. (Children are seen from fifth house(for first child) as it is the 11th house ‘hopes, dreams and desires’ from 7th house unions which ends up with the gain of progeny) Eighth house is where we can see the characteristics of the physical sexual organs/genitals , but it is only in the 12th house, we can see how the experience of bed pleasures will be for the chart native.
Here bed pleasures almost become like a prayer or a devout offering. Sex becomes worship and not in a base way for the chart native. That is why Venus is exalted in Pisces in the Kalapurusha’s chart.
Regardless, the 12th house is always to be considered the House of Loss..Vyaya Bhava. The karaka is the strict Saturn. It is only on this side of the veil of Maya, we consider ‘losses’ as ‘something bad or negative’. Moksha is for the few who see that loss and gain are both the same and that our entire existence is all an illusion.
Finally, this is also a very psychic and spiritually intuitive house. In the original chart, Pisces is a watery sign.
Keywords: losses, pilgrimage, spirituality, bed pleasures, long distance travel, foreign shores, psychic, meditation, isolation, education abroad etc.
12: 41: In the Kalapurusha or The Cosmic Man’s chart, the twelfth house is in the Rasi of Pisces. Whatever Pisces represents for the Kalapurusha, the 12th House Rasi or Twelfth House/Bhava would represent for the chart native.
12: 48: What does this mean?
Pisces represents the feet of the Kalapurusha. So does the Twelfth Bhava/House aka Lagna for the native.
Twelfth House is also called Vyaya Bhava
The Karaka of the Twelfth Bhava is the Saturn.
The 12th Bhava doesnt provide directional strength to any planets.
What Pisces is to Kalapurusha, 12th Bhava is to the native. Remember that Pisces is Saatva Guna and the motivation is Moksha.
Direction of 12th House is East.
12th House/Bhava represents losses, long distance travel and isolation.
Keywords: losses, pilgrimage, spirituality, bed pleasures, long distance travel, foreign shores, psychic, meditation, isolation, education abroad etc.
12: 48: There is only one assignment for the 12th House. Go back to section 12:45 to complete the assignment.
I will give 3 keywords to kickstart your Bhava keyword list:
Airport
Meditation
Forgiveness
